Good Lord!

I don't understand that last photo at all. How can a professional athlete like that not be fitted properly with shoes for his sport? Surely he and his trainers must realize that if he develops such serious sores, his footwear needs adjustment!

I've only been on intimate terms with one athlete in my life--a bicycle racer, who, by the way, had gloriously beautiful, very wide feet--and he was extremely meticulous about the special shoes he wore for his sport (they're not really for anything except cycling, since they have special clips on the soles to grip onto the pedals). These were first fitted specifically to his foot, and then, after that adjustment, there was a second adjustment to make sure everything was aligned properly when he was in racing position.

Apparently, he could do serious damage to himself if his shoes were not adjusted precisely, so vigorous and energetic were his motions in the sport.

Well, it must be the same for a professional tennis player. I realize that his recent match was of a record-breaking duration, but even after so many hours, his foot shouldn't be chafed like that.

Try eleven hours of tennis, he played a marathon-marathon match, naturally his feet looked like this.
