How do we know Hamlet is crazy? Because he goes barefoot, that's how! In the scenes in which Hamlet feigns madness, a number of actors have chosen barefootedness as one sure symptom of mental decay. This includes Mel Gibson, who bared one foot at least.
Now we have David Tennant in the magnificent production of the Royal Shakespeare Company, who bares both feet deliciously for his scenes of pretended lunacy, whether he's wearing jeans or tuxedo. The DVD of this BBC release will be available from Amazon.com on May 4.
I was commenting to my young, virile Cuban neighbor that I don't quite understand what going barefoot has to do with being crazy. He replied you would have to be crazy to go barefoot nowadays since there are so many foot fiends lying in wait out there, all set to pounce on your bare feet and slurp. Now, how do you suppose he knew that? Did you tell him?
